Hello everyone, my name is Jordan most people call me speedy. I am 19 years old, I am a sophomore and my major is Photography. I was born and raised here in Jersey City NJ, I have one older brother who was born and raised here as well. I can say I have been a creative person my entire life, when I was younger I use to draw a lot and make different paintings. I still draw and paint often when I get in the mood and my favorite things to draw are my favorite character/sculptures which are KAWS characters. I also have a a clothing brand which I have been doing for 2 years and a photography business as well that I have been doing for 3 years so I am very good at creating designs and graphics for my brand and using Adobe Lightroom to edit my photos. I am hoping that this class will be very fun and interesting and I hope to learn a lot for this course and I am very excited to get started.
QUOTES
UNDERSTANDING PATRIARCHY
"I emphasized that patriarchal ideology brainwashes men to believe that their domination of women is beneficial when it is not."
RESPONSE: As a man I can agree with this quote because it is simply true. A lot of us men think it is okay to dominate a woman and consider it as beneficial. Now don't get me wrong some women like that but most of them do not. I just think that based on what we see as men and see that some women gets a positive feeling from it makes us believe that we can use that same type of action for all women.
"As their daughter I was taught that it was my role to serve, to be weak, to be free from the burden of thinking, to caretake and nurture others."
RESPONSE: This quote stood out to me the most because this is exactly how society is basically set up till this day. Ever since we all were younger, we were told that as the man we have to provide and take charge in a relationship and women were told that it was they job to be soft, serve and to take care of people. With that being told to us as young kids and the media belittling women in certain situations just gives us men the mentality that we are better than the women in general because it is told for us to take charge and control more.
WHAT MEMES OWE TO ART HISTORY
"Memes are the democratizing medium of our collective digital present. Easy to make, easy to share; instantly recognizable and a little nonsensical; a hilarious and at times sickly-sweet jab at the world's blunders, scandals, protests, and hypocrisies."
RESPONSE: I totally agree with this quote because this is basically what social media is, the entire feed of social media platforms are all just different mixtures of memes. It is the easiest and fastest way to post something on social media and to catch people's attention very quickly. You can also make a meme about literally anything that is going on in the world it can be something positive or it can be something negative.
"Through humor, memes incite a collective reaction to everyday life as well as reveling in it, in a format no less playful than it is political, decoding the murky structural screw ups, paradoxes, and hypocrisies of our current political climate."
RESPONSE: Memes are apart of our everyday life and people get different feelings and reactions to it based on what's happening in the world rather if it's something funny about a performance or a jab at something about politics. Like I said before social media post are like memes so we look and react to them every single day.
MEMES ARE OUR GENERATION'S PROTEST ART
"The ability for the meme to empower and push back can really be powerful. They're definitely sites of resistance against perceptions of abuse of power. They spread so quickly and evolve and transform, and it's hard to shut them down in the way other forms of communicative protest can be silenced."
RESPONSE: This is absolutely true; memes are so powerful that they can actually cause a change in society. With one meme having so much power with people replying to it and sharing it over and over on social media it can impact and cause that person to take action to respond.
"Under Donald Trump specifically, Burroughs says, memes have grown in popularity as a way to express political opinions, similar to how George W. Bush's presidency gave rise to liberal blogs."
RESPONSE: Memes became very popular during the time when he was running for president and even when he was elected. There was a whole bunch of memes that were mocking him, teasing him and believe it or not some people were defending him.
