The Hunt for the American Dream
This poster is an ode to my family from Honduras. In the late 90s my cousin, Alejandro, was left alone in Honduras because my tia Norma wasn't able to afford a lifestyle for him at the time. He lived with my grandparents for the time being and when my aunt was ready to bring him to the states, he already decided to stay behind because he joined a gang. In 2016, he was killed in his home along with his pregnant girlfriend by the gang he was in. When I think of this experience, I think of how badly the system has let down my aunt and my cousin. She worked night and day cleaning buildings with her sisters and didn't have enough time or money to raise her own child and if they were more helpful towards single mothers then my cousin would probably still be here today. Many immigrants work towards the American dream (El Sueño Americano in Spanish) but for some it costs almost everything to achieve it. With inflation and low minimum wages, many families struggle to get by because there's no foundation for people who don't have it the way others do. And when families choose to migrate here, it's to chase a better life and better circumstances.
