Chapter 5 & 6

 Chapter 5:

Quotes:

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world”

  • If you want things to improve, you have to start by making changes yourself. It's about taking responsibility and not just waiting for others to do it for you.

“Change begins with awareness, but it culminates in action”’

  • Being aware of issues is important, but it's only the first step. Real change happens when we act on that awareness, whether it's through small everyday actions or larger efforts to make a difference in the world around us.

Chapter 6:

Quotes:

“As artistic activists we need to always think of our audience.”

  • As artistic activists, it's vital to keep your audience in mind. Their understanding and connection to the message shape the impact of your work. By considering their perspectives and experiences, you can effectively communicate and inspire change.

“Being clear about what you want your work to do is the essential first step to measuring its success”

  • Knowing what you aim to achieve with your work is crucial for gauging its success. By setting clear goals, you can better evaluate whether your efforts are making the intended impact. It's like having a roadmap to track progress and ensure you're heading in the right direction.

Chapter 5 pg. 192

I chose this art because you can connect it to the two quotes I used earlier for chapter 5.

1. Vegan Who Eats Fried Chicken: This person claims to be vegan but eats fried chicken occasionally. It's like saying you want to promote a cruelty-free lifestyle but then directly supporting animal cruelty. This contradicts the idea of "being the change you wish to see in the world." If you truly believe in veganism, you need to align your actions with your beliefs.

2. Helping Vulnerable People with Limits:  This individual talks about helping vulnerable people but believes there should be limits to that help. It's akin to being aware of the need to assist others but failing to fully act on it. "Change begins with awareness, but it culminates in action" emphasizes the importance of not just recognizing issues but actively addressing them without hesitation or conditions.

3. Worrying About Overpopulation Yet Wanting a Big Family: This person expresses concern about overpopulation but desires a large family. It's as if they acknowledge a global problem but prioritize their personal desires over it. This highlights a lack of commitment to the greater good, going against the principle of being the change one wishes to see in the world.

4. Exercising While Smoking: Someone who exercises but also smokes is neglecting their own health. They may be aware of the benefits of exercise but undermine them with a harmful habit. This disregards the idea of respecting oneself and aligning actions with knowledge. "Change begins with awareness, but it culminates in action" suggests that being aware of the importance of health is not enough; one must actively uphold practices that promote it.

In each scenario, the disconnect between belief and action undermines the essence of the quotes, which emphasize the importance of commitment and consistency in values and actions.

- "Change begins with awareness, but it culminates in action" says you need to know what's right and then do it. Compromising on values means you're not acting on what you know is important.

Failing to uphold our values or compromising on them weakens our integrity and self-respect. This then causes other issues such as It makes it hard for others to trust us and can lead to inner conflict. When we don't stick to our values, it can also hold us back from being true to ourselves and finding happiness. Overall, compromising on values hurts both individuals and society by eroding trust and undermining our sense of right and wrong. (I'm not sure if I want to do my final intervention on this but as of right now I'm heavily leaning towards it as I really believe in upholding your values and morals "
