“Individuals can and do make a difference, but meaningful change often also requires shifts in policies and laws, practice and structures” (255).
- Regarding some protests, we can't always follow the law to a certain extent. If the protest goes too far then the media will portray it as an attack. However, a peaceful protest in an area where the public isn't allowed in could gain a lot of attention.
“Today, in much of the world, it is naive. Most people have access to more information than they know what to do with. And this might be the very problem: we know too much” (263).
- Before the internet, people had to rely on newspapers, radio, and news channels. It was difficult for people to know what propaganda and which news was biased. Now that we have access to a lot of information some people can differentiate it. However, misinformation can spread more quickly and cause people to act rashly.
Idea
For my final project, I want to do a performance art about women's expectations. Society created impossible expectations for women to follow and if we didn't follow those expectations, we're often blamed for it. For example, while growing up I always saw girls with really skinny bodies, clear skin, and acting a certain way. Traditional families would stamp out traits that do not represent what society expects from a girl like what happened to Bell Hooks. I want to use an old shirt and design the back and front to symbolize insecurities and confidence. Women will have to write in the back to express a trait they dislike and write something they love about themselves in the front. If they don't believe it, I will help raise their confidence.
