Intervention: Two party system

My intervention is about the problem of having two options to vote for in the election. Ever since 2016, this country feels more divided than ever. It feels like whatever you choose will be the wrong option. Why should we decide on the lesser evil? Whether we like living here or not; this is our home and the people we put in power are not making things better for us.

My poster design is simple because most election-related artworks have one or two things on it such as a title and a picture. I made mine interactive so people can express their opinions about how they feel about the two-party system since the 2016 election. Even though the 2024 election is coming up, I looked for a website for people who still wanted to vote for someone else.  National Popular Vote.com allows people to tell their legislator to pass on the popular vote. If you go to the website, it will ask for your name, email, and zip code; it will send emails to your representatives about the popular vote. It’s unlikely for us to get a third-party candidate in the upcoming election but for future elections, we will have a better chance of showing our government that the two-party system is not working, and we need more options.

Quotes:

“No matter how artistic our activism, there will always be a need for old-fashioned boots-on-the-ground activism: Digging for facts, knocking on doors, organizing community meetings, badgering politicians, and submitting legal challenges”. (Pg.47)

While I didn’t do most of what they suggested, I do think that just making a poster will suffice. I am not good at making computer art so doing something by hand is more of my style. I had to talk to a lot of people to get their opinion and there were some interesting conversations about it.

“We are often our worst enemies when it comes to being creative. As artists and activists, we frequently self-censor our ideas.” (pg.58)

Having an idea and executing it were completely different things. Election artworks are supposed to be simple and easy to understand but I wanted to create something I haven’t seen before. I scrapped drafts until I decided to just stick with one idea.

I think the problem I had with this project was getting it out there. I like to think I’m passionate about topics like these but it’s hard to get people to participate unless you post it, or right in front of them. I was sick for half of last week so I couldn’t interview people in person like I planned. I tried putting it up outside of my apartment, but I guess people ignored it or couldn’t understand it because it was in English. It was so frustrating; luckily, I got a few opinions when I posted it on Instagram and made some calls. The answers I got were interesting because I talked to people of different ages. Highschoolers don’t care about politics, so they think what we have now is fine. People around my age are more knowledgeable about politics and they feel the need to get involved. While people who are decades older than me have mixed opinions; this all depends on how interested they are in politics. I respect their opinion and include them in the poster. I gave them the website to check it out but whether they use it or not is up to them.
