CHAPTER 3
" We learn from past successes and past failures, from people of the past whose struggles we identify with, and from those whose actions we oppose." pg.86
This quote stood out to me because it reminds me of my grandparents and when people say how older people are wise because they have experienced most of the things you are currently going through. They then teach us about the decisions they have made and the mistakes they have made so we won't do the same and have the same outcome as them.
"If you want your students to remember the lesson, and to integrate it into their lives, they need to puzzle through it, process it, and make it their own." pg.90
I find this very helpful because it can definitely help out a lot of teachers and professors so they can input this into their teaching style. I believe that if you make your lesson fun or relate it to the student's lives then it will make them more interested in the lesson and will make them engage more.
CHAPTER 4
"Culture is necessary for our very survival. Without it, we wouldn't know who or what we are, nor how to function beyond rudimentary biological life." pg.132
This is a fact, without culture, there is no us. Culture is what makes us and the way how we act and react to things a specific way. I like how everyone's culture is different because that is what makes everyone unique and different in their own way, and I just think it's good knowing about other people's cultures because it helps you get to know the person a little bit more.
"But art is also used to challenge authority and privilege, often precisely by challenging how those in power see the world. That privileged perspective is confronted when artists represent reality in different lights, showing the world from different perspectives." pg.138
A piece of art is worth a million words, and people have different perspectives on how they see artwork and what they think it means. So to see the way the artists create the art you can see their perspective on how they see the world or the specific event and probably makes you change your way of thinking based on the way the artist displayed it.
Vladimir Tatlin- Monument to the Third International (1919) |
Tatlin's tower was created soon after the revolution which was in 1919. It stood four hundred meters tall, almost taller than the Eiffel Tower and hovered over the main river in central Saint Petersburg. The tower was made of three internal revolving levels which helps symbolize "the revolution". This tower was never built because they didn't know if the design of the tower would be stable where it would be placed and the specific technology that was needed to build it was not available yet at the time. The closest it has gotten to being built was a wooden model that was only five meters.
Freedom To Move- Shaun Leonardo |
Shaun Leonardo was trying to showcase a meaning to men specifically about showing their emotions and what men are looked at in certain situations. He explained how when he was younger he didn't see any men in his family cry so he thought that men weren't supposed to cry or show their emotions. So what he did was performed different acts of men in situations where they were being beaten down and defeated to show that its okay to show their emotions.
