Chapter 3
“By removing himself from the scene at the very moment both his friends and enemies demanded him to lead, Jesus put responsibility back upon his followers. He let the people know that if the world was to be changed, then they would be the ones to change it (95)”.
A protest doesn’t mean anything if people blindly follow their leader. A leader can guide the protesters to help their community or initiate a plan, but they are responsible for how they act during a movement. If the leader falls, then the people will need to continue to fight for their goal.
“The principle; style matters. People associate the message with the messenger, and we appear in public to communicate a message that is often more powerful than the words on the pamphlets we hand out (109)”.
I never really thought that what you wear can send a message. Depending on the situation; I can see how it can make a huge impact on your target audience. It could show them the current conditions they are in, that they are human like everyone else, or that they are allowed to get involved in the current situation.
Chapter 4
“But art is also used to challenge authority and privilege, often precisely by challenging how those in power see the world. That privileged perspective is confronted when artists represent reality in different lights, showing the world from different perspectives” (138).
Before the internet, artists created artworks that showed the public the horrors of war, poverty, famine, etc. People needed to know what was happening in different events around the world and artists gave them their perspective through paintings.
“One of the biggest mistakes an artist can make is to fool themselves into thinking they can create outside of culture. They can expand it, turn it inside out, and refute it, but the one thing an artist cannot do is create outside of it “(142).
I think art is all about culture; we can take inspiration from it or be influenced by it. How can art NOT be about culture? I think it shows how much the artists know about themselves and how much research they have done.
This was made by the Black Panther Party.
