Chapter 3 and 4

White Chess Set, Yoko Ono’s, 1966

I like the way Yoko did this. I interpreted this as instead of fighting and competing with each other why can’t we come together and get along? Life can be so peaceful if we come together and build each other up. Sadly, it’s everybody or every country worrying about themselves when it comes to succeeding.

                                             The Black Panthers

I get why the name of the political cartoon is, " The Only Good Pig, Is a Dead Pig." At the time police brutality was on the rise. Police are supposed to protect people, but they are killing Black people instead. They are doing what they were made to do because during slavery they were used to capture slaves. They are using their authority to harm people of color. So, now they trying to spread the message that cops are better off dead instead of alive attacking people of color.

Quotes:

“An Ideal of power not used to privilege oneself, as it often is, but as a gift for helping others, caring for and sharing with those on the bottom of society.” (Chapter 2, pg. 92-93)

-          Power can change a person’s whole persona. The majority of the time it’s not in a good way. Once a person has power, they find ways where they can exploit their power. Instead of doing that use your power to give back to those who are disadvantaged in society. I’m not talking about that charity work they do and get a tax write-off later in the year either.  Sadly, we live in a world where everybody is for themselves. In Childish Gambino's song This is America he said, “Grandma said get your money black man.” Which meant getting your money and never looking back especially where you come from. Many rich and famous people do this get rich and forget where they came from. I’m not saying they are entitled to give their money away. What I’m saying is why can’t we all build each other up? Or why are there still people who are homeless or not getting the health care they need because of money? Especially with school if you think about it schools that are funded by the rich 9 times out of 10 are getting a better education with better books than schools that are not funded by the rich. Stop preaching about all the good you would do for a community when as soon as you get in power, you act like the ones who don’t give a cramp about us.

“When humor is done well, it is a powerful political weapon” (chapter 2, pg. 113)

-          There’s a saying the truth is always shown through a joke or a joke is truth wrapped in a smile. The joke is usually said on a more sarcastic side. It can also challenge authority depending on how effective the joke is. Humor can expose wrongful doing and bring light to serious issues in a way that a wide audience can be engaged in. It can also connect people who think otherwise on certain topics and diffuse tensions. Sometimes, you have to use humor to get people to understand the wrongs and ignorance in the world. Some act like they don’t understand if you just be direct with them.

“Art is also used to challenge authority and privilege, often precisely by challenging how those in power see the world.” (chapter 5, pg. 138)

-          When you sit back and think about people in power's actions, you would notice they don’t understand what they are doing. Well, how badly they are affecting the people. Using art to challenge their authority can raise awareness and inspire for a change to happen. Also, it can get the audience to question the dominant culture and the societal norms we have to follow. Art like this is helping those who don’t have a voice to speak up against privilege and people with authority.

“There is no way to escape culture. What we can do is create forms of culture that express the values we want to reproduce, instead of passively accepting those of dominant culture.” (chapter 5, pg. 166)

I like this quote a lot it emphasizes promoting social change by challenging the dominant narratives. We tend to keep accepting the dominant culture when it’s not fair for all to thrive. Instead of staying stuck in that culture, we can form one where we can all thrive. By using art, we can create this change because it starts conversations and sparks up emotions that can challenge the power structure. It also gives voice to marginalized voices who are silenced.
