4/3 quotes

Chapter 5

“In order for us, as art activists, to employ facts in effective ways, it will be useful for us to have at least a basic understanding of our minds and brain work. We can then present facts in ways that people can understand, integrate, and most critically, act upon” (174).

  • Art activists must have an understanding of what they are protesting for so they may challenge other people's opinions on the subject. Having a basic understanding of the situation may bring awareness to those unsure of what is happening.

“Researchers have also found that we tend to only consider information that fits into what we already believe. That is, we find and bend facts so they conform to what we think we know. This is called “confirmation bias” (185).

  • I never really thought about it that way. As we grow older, it gets more difficult to change someone’s beliefs in politics, religion, or morals. What we see in the media may affect our views, but some people may stubbornly hold to their beliefs even if it is wrong. So, it’s important to look at other sources to see if the information is correct.

Chapter 6

“Understanding tendencies of loss aversion can help us become better artistic activists. It is important that our work acknowledges the various costs people face and validates their fears and doubts” (227).

  • Sometimes we have to know when to cut our losses or that losing is inevitable. But we try to avoid loss because we are afraid of the consequences that follow. We have to understand the people we are trying to help so we may have a chance of getting their cooperation and better relations.

“The reasoning is both moral and strategic: if we want to change society, we really do need to reach everyone. But let’s be realistic, this is logically impossible. Trying to reach everyone is neither an efficient use of resources, and nor would be effective” (235).

  • I don’t think it’s impossible, but reaching everyone would take time. There are very few things the world can agree on; even then there will always be someone who will disagree. For the past few years, many people have been brought together to fight against injustice and cruelty. However, to change society, we need people who will represent our beliefs and change the law.

    Chapter 5 pg.174

I already have something in mind for my next intervention however the artwork did resonate with me. From my point of view, I see the man was explaining to the jury that capitalism is the root of violence, racism, injustice, and corruption. He turns to look at us with a smug look on his face as if he were challenging us to prove him wrong.
