Chapter 5 and 6 Giselle VERDIN

Chapter 5:

Quotes:

“Change begins with awareness, but it culminates in action”

“Activism is the voice of the oppressed, the marginalized, and the silenced.”

Responses:

This suggests that to create a meaningful change in society it first starts with acknowledging the problem and the injustices that should be addressed. As awareness serves as the foundation upon which action is built.

It highlights the essential role that activism plays in voicing the voices of those who are overlooked and ignored in society. It also emphasizes that activism can serve as a platform for individuals.

Chapter 6:

Quotes:

“As artistic activists we need to always think of our audience.”

“A common mistake is seeking to define the audience solely in terms of exclusion, where one person’s inclusion entails the cruel rejection of another”

Responses:

Artistic activism has their focus on communication and engagement with the audience to show messages and inspire action. By understanding the audience better one can narrow down how to approach the situation.

This suggests that some activists may be too concerned on who is not in their movement or their cause which then puts them in the mindset where inclusion for another person could imply rejection.

The project that stood out to me the most was this poster of people saying one statement but then they follow up with a statement that cancels out the other one. I could not find the artists name or the name of this project. This art intervention has affected me because it like had me dumbfounded because one thing is being said but followed up by something that does not go with it. This project holds meaning of how one may not be honest and be hypocritical. This project uses project includes persuasion as it says two things at once that don't make sense and it makes you think about it.
